Age of Conan is described as the “goriest MMO available today”, Funcom’s online adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s coveted novels has finally arrived - Age of Conan.

In February of this year, Funcom had the enviable task of announcing a Beta signup population of several hundred thousand – one of the largest in the history of gaming. The company had mixed success with its first MMO Anarchy Online, with a strong showing upon launch but an inability to monopolize with future expansions. Shadowlands, the game’s second addition, received critical acclaim at all levels and rejuvenated the game to completely new heights, but could not overcome the dominance of World of Warcraft.

Existing online PC games are often questioned for being not following through on the theme of the game. Doing away with the blood and gore for more mainstream appeal is not something that can be said about Age of Conan.

Conan clashes with all other MMORPGs. Whilst Anarchy Online was ahead of the field in producing the first post-apocolyptic MMO to match the expectations of many gamers, Conan guarantees to innovate in the online gaming genre.

Few have talked about Age of Conan’s transaction platform, only that currency used will be Gold. Though the developer has experience of ingame economies with Anarchy Online, this could be the area of gameplay where Funcom show some weakness.

Hyboria is one of online gaming’s most coveted worlds which is exemplified in the press attention the game has received. AoC has been inundated with pre-launch credit from various recognized outlets, and the sentiments are widely echoed by those who have tested the game.
